Wikipedia.org states that “The Cold War was a state of geopolitical tension after World War II between powers in the Eastern Bloc and powers in the Western Bloc”. The western bloc is the United States and their NATO allies. NATO is the North Atlantic Treaty Organization. NATO was created in 1949 by the United States, Canada, and other European nations, to provide security against the Soviet Union. The NATO allies were Belgium, Canada, Denmark,France, Iceland, Italy, Luxembourg, Netherlands, Norway, Portugal, the United Kingdom, Greece, Turkey, West Germany, and Spain. The Eastern Bloc is the Soviet union and their satellite states. The satellite states were Czechoslovakia, East Germany, Hungary, Poland, Romania. The cold war started based on rivalries. Rivalries between the two major superpowers the USA and the USSR, emerged after World War II. This rivalry spanned from 1947 to 1991 as each country tried to establish their world leadership. The war was started with political and economical arguments, like capitalism versus communism. The cold war wasn’t a direct war between these two countries, but they used propaganda, proxy wars and spying to gain power. Propaganda is information, especially of a biased or misleading nature, used to promote or publicize a particular political cause or point of view, such as communism. A proxy war in this instance is a war that was backed by a country to push their political ideas. The basis of these conflicts are capitalism vs communism. Communism is a political theory derived from Karl Marx, advocating class war and leading to a society in which all property is publicly owned, and each person works and is paid according to their abilities and needs. Capitalism is an economic and political system in which a country’s trade and industry are controlled by private owners for profit, rather than by the state. The US follows a capitalism government, while the Soviet Union followed a communist government. In Communism, the community or society solely owns the resources or the means of production. On the other hand, in capitalism, the resources or the means of production lies with a private owner. The US wanted their government to be capitalism because they didn’t like the idea of everyone shares and gets the same amount of everything, no matter how hard they work. In 1954 the house passed the communist control act of 1954. It made communism unable to set roots down in America, or bring the communist ideas to America and have them spread. This was to avoid starting a mixture of another cold war and the civil war. The US congress passed this with a 265 to 2 vote.During the cold war there were some proxy wars like the Vietnam War and the Korean War. The vietnam war was worse than the korean war because it had more casualties than the korean war did. The korean war lasted from 1950 to 1953. The war began when north korea tried to invade south korea. North korea wanted to have south korea under there communist rule. So both parts of the country asked for help from their allies and then the help came. We’ve been allies with south korea for almost 70 years. Another example of a proxy war is the vietnam war. The vietnam war lasted a span of 20 years or 1955 to 1975. at the roots of the war was a conflict of independence, from France and to avoid communism. The cuban missile crisis was the closest the US and Soviet Union came to actual war. It started October 14th 1962 it brought the US and the USSR to the edge of nuclear conflict. The missiles the Soviets were using were medium range missiles. The name of the missile they used was an mrbm. MRBM stands for medium range ballistic missile. In the blast radius was Washington DC which would take out the president and all of washington dc. The whole reason the soviets wanted to take out washington was so the US would have no one to lead them or defend them. President Kennedy tried his hardest to avoid nuclear war, and all his efforts paid off in the end. However, a year after the cuban missile crisis, he was assassinated. In the end everything that happened, happened for a reason like without the cuban missile crisis there wouldn’t be the washington to Moscow hotline or without the Berlin Wall there wouldn’t have been a reason to take it down which then the cold war would have lasted longer than it did. History.com states “that space exploration served as another dramatic arena for Cold War competition, like Sputnik.” Sputnik was the first satellite in space. It was put in space by the soviets, they launched into space in October 1957. Sputnik traveled around the earth for 21 days, and it took it 96 minutes in one day. It was also 184 lbs. Then one year later in 1958 congress passed a law creating an agency the national aeronautics and space administration or NASA. NASA is incharge of scientific space exploration. This now meant is was a race between the 2 superpowers for the first man in space and the first man on the moon and all the other space firsts. They also had the first man in space, but we beat them for the first man on the moon. May 5, 1961 was the day the first american, Alan Shepard, went into space. He was aboard the space capsule Fred. John Glenn, in february 1962, orbited the earth three times. In project Gemini’s goal was to have the first people to walk in space. This plan was created by a man named Edward White. Project Gemini was successful. In 1961 was when they started the Apollo missions. The whole purpose of the Apollo missions was getting the first man on the moon. 1967 was when the Apollo devastation happened, it killed 3 people in a fire. On july 20th 1969 Apollo 11 orbited the moon. All apollo missions ended in december 1972. The whole point of the space races was to see which of the two main superpowers was the best. We also had the first woman in space, Sally Ride. She was on the first space shuttle “Columbia”. While developing “Challenger” NASA had many setbacks. On january 28 1986 one of the tests killed all seven crew members including Christa McAuliffe. She was a teacher From Concord New Hampshire. She was also the first civilian chosen to go into space.According to history.com “The cold war came to a close once Richard Nixon took office he did many things to help the cold war end” The cold war ended in 1991, because communism was corrupt and failed. The people that lived there revolted and the iron curtain came down. The iron curtain was a barrier that divided the soviet union and other countries in Europe, such as Germany and the Berlin wall. After the Cold War the Soviet Union separated and became Russia, Republic of Armenia, Republic of Azerbaijan, Republic of Belarus, Republic of Estonia, Georgia, Republic of Kazakhstan, Republic of Kyrgyzstan, Republic of Latvia, Republic of Lithuania, Republic of Moldova , Republic of Tajikistan, Republic of Turkmenistan, Ukraine, and Republic of Uzbekistan. Even to this day Russia is still trying to establish communism and invade countries that used to belong to the Soviet Union. Such as the Ukraine which they invaded back in 2014, or by backing a proxy war in Syria.
