is common to everyone in the world is food.  Zomato is a restaurant search service.  It was started in India with the name
Foodiebay in 2008 by Deepinder Goyal and Pankaj
Chaddah. It was renamed in 2010 as Zomato to rhyme with ‘tomato’ and avoid any
confusions wit Ebay.

The founders, seeing people getting irritated by standing in
long queues just to look at the menu card in the food court of their previous
organization, came up with a solution to it. They clicked pictures of the menu
card and put it up on the company’s intranet website. Soon this developed and
was made available to the public. They opened up services in Delhi, Mumbai and
Kolkata and soon to all major cities in India.

They decided that a Smartphone based mobile application would
help the users to use it on the go. Their main investor for this move was Info
Edge (India) owned by Sanjeev Bikhchandani. Zomato launched applications
for iOS, Windows Phone and BlackBerry devices. Initially it
just gave the menus and reviews of restaurants. Later it was developed into a
comprehensive application giving options to book tables, online ordering of
food, connecting with Google Maps for determining location and with Uber for
cab services. They ensured that the information provided was relevant and exhaustive.
Market research and data collection teams were sent out to each street in the
city to collect information personally.

Global expansion was one of their main objectives.  They extended services beyond India to UAE,
Sri Lanka, UK, New Zealand, South Africa etc. In July 2014 it acquired New
Zealand’s ‘Menu-mania’.

Recently Zomato made strategical changes towards
making the business profitable and cut down cashless business in certain
markets. It is also planning to split its operations into 2 parts.
Revenue sourcing through ad sales where there is high volume of traffic is one
of the parts. The other part was to cash in on table reservation software where
the traffic from ad sales was comparatively lesser.

They are currently present in 22 countries and cover around a
million restaurants. They recently launched services in Toronto.
