Music has always affected and been apart of people’s lives. There are many benefits but also detriments to listening to music while you work. One of the times music can definitely benefit you is in a noisy workspace. “In this scenario, listening to music can actually help, because it blocks out the other excessive input that could overwhelm you and keeps you calm” (Popomaronis). Your brain is trying to block out all the background noise and that is taking energy from you that could go into focusing on your job. A noisy and distracting workplace can decrease a person’s productivity. “In one study involving information technology specialists, she found that those who listened to music completed their tasks more quickly and came up with better ideas than those who didn’t, because the music improved their mood” (Ciotti). Better mood and better focus make for a better work experience.Music during the wrong time can have negative effects. An example of when you should refrain from using music is when you are trying to learn. “If you have to learn something at work, its best to turn off your music, especially if you’re learning verbally or through reading and the music has lyrics” (Popomaronis). To learn, your brain has to process information and when you add music to that your brain now has to try to process double the information. This means your brain can make mistakes and store the wrong things instead of what you are supposed to be learning. At school and work, its best to just leave the music off so you can focus on your learning. How the music will affect you also depends on what kind you are listening to. Different types of music are best for different types of situations. “For intensive work, lyrics are especially destructive for focus” (Ciotti). It is often to hard to focus when you have words in your ears. “It may be beneficial to listen to music you are familiar with” (Ciotti). You already know what the music sounds like so it will be much easier to pay attention to the task you are working on. Some people work better with different types of music. There are benefits and detriments to listening to music while you work, so the best thing to do is to test out different types of music and see what you like. If you want to learn something new turn the music off. If you need to focus and people are distracting you pick familiar music to keep you in a good mood and help with productivity. The most important thing is being able to focus at school and at work.
