today’s era, many high schools, colleges and universities have adopted the use
of the American Psychological Association (APA) referencing style as the basis
of which researches are done. With information now easily accessible at the tip
of ones fingertips, plagiarism is also a cause for concern. With the inception
of the APA referencing style there has been a standard to which one must abide
by when writing a research paper. Hence in 1929, the American Psychological
Association published a seven (7) page “standard of procedure, to which
exceptions would doubtless be necessary, but to which reference might be made
in cases of doubt” (Bentley et al., 1929, p. 57).

The American
Psychological Association (APA) style is commonly used to cite references used
for papers, publications and research within the social sciences (Piaz et. Al.
2016). According to the American Psychology Association’s website, the APA
style of writing was created by a group of psychologists, business managers and
anthropologists who sought to establish a simple set of procedures that would
systematize scientific writing with the aim of increasing the ease of reading
comprehension. APA style is generally used for term papers, research reports,
empirical studies, literature reviews, theoretical articles, methodological
articles and case studies.  One of the purposes of the APA style of
writing is the conformance uniformity and the avoidance of plagiarism. The Miriam-
Webster online dictionary defines plagiarism as to pass off or steal the idea,
production or words of another as one’s own without crediting the source. The
APA style of writing stipulates the elements of citation, in-text citation, direct
quotes, and paraphrasing and reference list.

The APA referencing style seeks enhances
ones research without plagiarizing someone else’s information. It forces the
writer to give credit to the original author of the document quoted.
states that “Learning and understanding APA
citations, particularly in-text citations, helps college students avoid
plagiarism. This is particularly important for research papers, as much of the
presented evidence is based on third-party information found through research.
Any information that is paraphrased, summarized or quoted must be properly
cited or the writer risks plagiarizing his sources. Following APA guidelines
for citations makes using research safer by giving credit to the original
source of information, and it makes a paper more credible by identifying
reliable sources”.
