Edgar Allan Poe was an American writer, poet, and literary critic. He was known for his odd symbolic horror stories. Poe was born on January 19, 1809 in Boston, Massachusetts (“Poe Biography”). He was the son of David Poe Jr. and Elizabeth Arnold Poe (“Poe Biography”). Unfortunately, when Edgar was three years old he was orphaned along with his two siblings, his brother William Leonard Poe and his sister Rosalie Mackenzie Poe, because their mother died of tuberculosis, and their father left without them (1-3). They all went to different families and Poe went to the wealthy family of John and Frances Allan in Richmond, Virginia. They treated him like one of their own. They sent Poe to school when he was 6 years old in England for five years. He learned Latin and French. He came back to America and went to the University of Virginia when he was 17. That was when things differed between John Allan and Edgar. Edgar wanted to become a writer and John did not support that. Poe wrote many tragic stories and poems, it makes you wonder why he would write such tragedies. He had several misfortunes but also people or family that influenced his writings. Poe’s wife was a big influence on his stories. One story in particular was “Annabel Lee.” He says, “And this maiden she lived with no other thought than to love and be loved by me,” in the story. He’s talking about their love for each other. Another inspiration of Edgar’s was his aunt. When his parents passed away his aunt was all he had and he saw her as his mother in which he wrote the poem, “To My Mother,” about. He said, ” My mother– my own mother, who died early, was but the mother of myself; but you are mother to the one I loved so dearly.” His aunt adored Poe especially after he married Virginia, her daughter and Poe’s cousin. Charles Dickens was also an inspiration to Edgar. That is what made Poe write the story of, “The Raven.” Charles Dickens had a real pet raven named Grip and he was so fascinated by it that he kept it and studied it. Dickens taught his raven many tricks which is what interested Poe the most and acted as a direct influence for his story (“Edgar Allan Poe”).Edgar Allan Poe had many major accomplishments with his writings. Poe launch a new genre of detective fiction which the world had not been introduced to yet by anyone else. Edgar was also America’s first great literary critic. He was the first American writer to write about criticism, theory of composition, and about the rules of creative art (“Poe’s Short Stories”). Edgar Allan Poe, last but not least, was the master of the psychological horror story in his time. No one had produced such stories as him.Edgar lived a rough life it was not easy for by no means. He was a hard drinker. Some people say that is how he died, others are not so sure about that. It is really an ongoing mystery as what caused Poe’s death because the biggest is theory is that he died of a brain tumor, which apparently caused him to act up before his death. Edgar Allan Poe died in the hospital after he collapsed on the streets on October 7, 1849 in Baltimore, Maryland. He never regained consciousness to tell what actually happened. So I guess we will never know what happened to the beloved poet.
