From the early years of individuals’ education, students were compelled by parents to continue studying as much as possible. Because it is said that education is one of the major assets which one can keep for the whole lifetime. Education is a treasure which will give future career and better life. However, many high school students dropped out of school even if parents had given advice and thoughts regarding a better life with the help of standard education. The dropout rate of high school students never diminishes worldwide. In the United States’ rate of dropout, it shows a little change in the past years from 1990 to 2000 (Table 1).
“Data compiled by NCES (National Center for Education Statistics) indicates that the percentage of 16-through 24-year-olds who were dropouts ranged between 10. 9 and 12. 5 percent” (General Accounting Office-GAO, 2002, p. 7). Although, region’s dropout rate shows a discrepancy wherein “[t]he highest dropout rates occurred in the South and West, while the lowest rates occurred in the Northeast and Midwest” (GAO, 2002). It’s visible in table 2, “while the national portion of 16 through 24-year-olds that were dropouts was 10. 9 percent in October 2000, the regional averaged ranged from 12.
9 percent in the South to 8. 5 percent in the Northeast” (GAO, 2002, p. 8)In table 3, NCES or the National Center for the Education Statistics shows the dropout rates in percentage as of the year 2000 of students that were foreign born. GAO (2002) wrote the following as a result: Hispanics born outside the country accounted for only 6. 6 percent of all 16-through 24-years-olds, they accounted for more than a quarter of all dropouts in 2000 and thus significantly raised the overall Hispanic dropout rate and the national dropout rate (p. 11).
Effects of Dropout Students to Education and to the Society When a high school student chooses to dropout of schooling, one looses the opportunity to have a good education. Likewise, most of high school dropouts are or turned out to be poor readers. Though, there are lots of different motives on why many teenagers prefer to dropout. However, regarding education, as the word implies, literacy is considered as one of the most important for gaining knowledge. To be called as an “educated person”, an individual must undergo standard education even it will have to be gained in different ways or forms.
A high school dropout usually becomes more illiterate than high school graduates. In this case, when a certain school has a numerous number of dropouts, this will result on lowering of the school standards of education for the reason that many dropout students could become illiterate. Base from researches, students did not like the way of teaching, the kind of environment they are in, and because of the less challenging work which were given by the instructors and the school (Fleishman, n. d. ). These are the common reasons on why others drop out of school.
On the other hand, before a student drops schooling, some were unable to cope with the lectures or the kind of teaching in their class. Some dropout students were terrified with their teachers’ way of dealing with slow learners. Others were associated with personal difficulties such as emotional problem, transferring from one school to another and having to retain in school because of “failing subjects,” etc (Bridgeland, Dilulio and Morison, 2006). Those reasons on why high school students chose to dropout means that the education has less support for individuals who need extra help to continue their studies.
By these causes of dropping out of school, the effect on education is degradation of its standard and quality. Students’ dropping out of school in America triggers their education’s standards and because of that, education is continually adapting to its learners need on preventing the effects of this predicament. Society has been affected by this “silent epidemic,” every time a student fails to accomplish the responsibility as a learner in a school, society also suffers.
However, majority of high school dropouts are in a low income family and in minority of students (Alliance for Excellent Education, 2007). Also, in the article of Washington Post it was written that “[h]igh school dropouts are significantly less likely than better-educated Americans to vote, trust government, do volunteer work, or go to church, according to a new report that reveals a widening gap in ‘civic health’ between the nation’s upper and lower classes” (cited in Heine, 2006).
And, base from the Community Foundation of America’s Research, “three quarters of all high school dropouts didn’t have jobs” (cited in Heine, 2006). Moreover, if ever a high school dropout could have a job; dropouts’ compensation is likely lesser during working years compared to high school graduates who have formal jobs. By these lesser compensations, the government could not take more taxes on lesser compensated workers and the budget for a community will also be affected.
The states’ looses its ‘supposed to be’ a calculated budget if only the dropouts could finish their studies before having jobs. In addition, school’s dropouts are at higher consequences to be in jailed because ‘some’ of high school dropouts are being delinquent; they mostly indulge in alcohol and prohibited drugs and do unlawful acts to the community. It is not just ruining one’s life but also ruining of the society, and in that way, society is indeed affected by having high school dropouts.
Although, just for clarification: many dropouts were not like others who had been a problem of a community, to some fortunate dropouts luck could still come in, and not all dropouts are pest of society. This research only illustrates the consequences of being a high school dropout not just the effects to an individual who gave up studying but mostly its effect to the society as a whole.
