Introduction:

Cataract is
a chronic condition expressed as the body’s inability in maintaining a clear
crystalline lens. The most recent estimates from
World Health Organization (WHO) reveal that 47.8% of global blindness is due to
cataract. The key to the success of the Global Vision 2020: The right to sight
initiative is a special effort to tackle cataract blindness which includes estimation
of magnitude of the problem and understanding factors associated with it. Ultra high diluted
cineraria maritime selected on the basis of physiological actions and symptom
similarity acts favorably on lens of the eyes. But not enough research work is
carried on the direct action of homeopathic cineraria on the crystalline lens
of the eyes. Thus, Homeopathic
cineraria help to avoid progression of cataract, surgery and its side effects
such as infection, bleeding and retinal detachment. This pilot study
attempts to study the direct action of homeopathic medicines on the lens of the
eyes by testing the efficiency in cataract individuals.

Aim;

The present study was carried out to find the effects of ultra diluted
homeopathic cineraria maritima application as a facilitating factors related to
cataract health services in south India.

Methods:

Diagnosed cases of 37 cataract individuals were
selected from primary medical center with different ages, among lowest was 4
and highest was 70years. Those were primary (17), secondary (13), congenital (2)
and traumatic (5) cataract cases and tested the intensity of the conditions with
Lens Opacities
Classification System III (LOCS III) and noted the grades of cataract. Then cases were treated with
sterile homeopathic cineraria 5x eye drops externally three times a day for 4
months. Parameters checked by trained ophthalmologist in every 30 days and
access the vision by special tools called the quality of vision questionnaires (QoV)
coined by Colm McAlinden.

Result:

Homeopathic cineraria shown positive changes in
29 of 37cases and no improvements for 8 individuals. Fair improvements noted in
21 of 37, Mild improvements noted in 8 cases, which was free from symptom to
the patients. Overall improvement in 78.38 % cases. No improvements in 21.62%
cases. Moderate to good improvements in 72.5%, mild improvement in 27.5% cases.

Conclusion/Discussion:

This study clearly exhibit that potentised
cineraria external is most effective in treating cataract cases by acting over
avascular fiber rich lens as safe
lymphagogue and increasing circulation to the intraocular tissues as well as  collateral circulation and also promotes  normal metabolism. The benefits attained were
more satisfactory when treated the early stage of cataract. In advanced cases,
where pathological changes caused by the deterioration of metabolic functions
have occurred, as in senility, less favorable results were noted.  This pilot study justifies that use of
cineraria as rejuvenator for the eyes affected with cataract.
