Approximately 300 million tons of plastics is produced every year! Although plastic is a great invention that many of us use daily, it is becoming the oceans worst enemy. Many say we have reached our crisis point on the amount of plastic that is entering the ocean.Due to the increasing amount of plastics in the oceans the aquatic life is suffering greatly.Swaminathan Ramesh,Ocean Conservancy and many scientists believe they have the answers of how to fix this issue and answers to how bad the issue has become.According to my sources eight million tons of plastic is dumped into the ocean each year. This waste consist of plastic items many of us only use once and then discard because it has “lost its value”. For example, when we go to the grocery store many people get their groceries bagged in plastic. As soon as they get home they take the groceries out of the bag and then throw the plastic bags away. This similar thing happens to about fifty percent of the plastic items produced.Water bottles are another plastic item that is produced by the ton and causing problems amongst the aquatic life.100.7 billion plastic bottles were sold in 2014.Some sources say that it takes more water and energy to get the water in the bottle than what is actually in the bottle.Marine life is not just getting stuck in six-pack holders, they are being exposed to toxins. The chemicals in the plastic release toxins in the water that absorb into the aquatic population. This leads to diseases and health conditions in fish, turtles, etc. These diseases eventually affect humans when they consume the infected seafood. A few toxins that entered human life, due to infected sea creatures have been proven to cause complications in organs that deal with hormone output. This shows that ocean plastics are not only hurting aquatic creatures but it is hurting the ones who started the problem as well.A few people think they have the answers on how to fix the ocean plastics problem. Many scientists believe that the problem is caused by everyone from the government to the consumers, however, the waste management companies are the main ones to blame. Waste management pick up the plastic but due to poorly enclosed landfills and illegal dumping, leakage becomes a problem. Once these companies find ways to stop the leakage the amount of plastics in oceans will decrease tremendously.Additionally, an increase in recycling facilities will help the problem.Popular companies such as Coca-Cola are partnering up with Ocean Conservancy to find ways to reduce and prevent the problem in the future. Scientists also think that if people were educated on how to change their behaviors and informed on the impacts plastics have on the ocean the human population will change their behavior when it comes to pollution. Swaminathan Ramesh, an organic chemist, believes he created the next best thing on fixing the ocean plastics problem. Ramesh created a mobile reactor that turns water plastics into diesel. The invention has stirred up conversation about the possible effect it could have on climate change but Ramesh believes that the device is less carbon intensive than the original method of obtaining diesel oil. With increased attention and public help this ocean plastics problem will hopefully be resolved soon.
