All over our ecosystems environmental pollution is contaminating the public. The major types of environmental pollution are air pollution, ocean litter, pesticides and fertilizers and noise and light pollution to the public. We need two things to sustain life no matter where we are on this planet. Those two things that are consist are water and air. Without water and without air we would be like the other plants — no man, no animals, no plants. The biosphere however ensures that we are living a self balanced life and but also creates the perennial sources of minerals and energies without the human civilization of today not to be built. The balance that the human life and other forms existence have flourished on each for thousands of years. When this biosphere is affected The Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) measures mostly emission factors as well as external studies. When they see a dangerous amount of smog being made around a city they begin to pass legislation. For example in 1989 they passed the Office of Technology Assessment that reported “many U.S. metropolitan areas had not met their goals for controlling smog forming ozones”(Leven). Then in 1990 amendments were made by Congress that gave EPA six months to make sure all emissions contributing to the ozone were assigned, up-to-date, and had accurate factors. Every three years the EPA has been checking the numbers since. This smog has heavily affected the air pollution on our planet especially around major cities. Not only is smog a type of air pollution but so is the burning of fossil fuels, in both energy plants and vehicles. Also, releasing massive amounts of carbon dioxide into the atmosphere, which has caused climate change. Areas can become polluted by emissions from smoking and cooking. When some of these chemicals are released into the air, “contribute to smog and acid rain”(WWF). A small exposure to air pollution can irritate the eyes, nose and throat causing respiratory infections. A large exposure can lead to lung cancer and heart disease and can also lead to significant climatic changes that have been reaching negative effects on food, water and ecosystems. When water mixes with certain chemicals particularly “sulfur dioxide and nitrogen oxide”(WWF), it can lead to the creation of acid rain. This rain can toxify the soil and air surrounding wherever it touches. At low levels of this toxification it can stress fish in lakes and streams or in high levels kill them. Acid rain also “weakens trees in forests and contributes to air pollution that can harm humans”(WWF).Another type of pollution that definitely affects the environment is water pollution. Clean freshwater is essential to our lives just as much as air and without it we would not survive. However, “1.1 billion people lack access to water and 2.4 billion don’t have adequate sanitation. When water normally becomes polluted it is from toxic substances dumped or washed into streams. There is a certain type of water pollution called an algae bloom where an overabundance of nutrients can fuel the excessive growth of algae, which can sometimes have devastating consequences. Every spring and summer in the Chesapeake Bay, these harmful “algae blooms appear in various parts of the Bay and can potentially spread rapidly and kill marine life”(Leven). With water pollution recently, algae-based technologies have been attracting a potential in wastewater treatment and hazardous contaminant removal. Pharmaceuticals and personal care products (PPCPs) consist of a variety of things that have been used to treat both humans and animals. They are also seen as “emerging environmental contaminants due to their presence in the environment and high environmental risks”(Wang). The most cost efficient way is using the algae-based technologies to reveal the effects of PPCPs on algae and identify mechanisms involving their removal from the affected water. In recent news, the Trump administration proposed slashing the EPA’s budget “by 31 percent for fiscal year 2018″(Leven). If the EPA is unable to complete their studies, air pollution and water pollution is only going to get worse. Pollution is regulated at a local, national and international level. If we work together at all three levels we can minimize the impacts of development and reduce pollution. Another important key factor is raising environmental awareness and encouraging local conservation. While conserving and being aware of our materials and their harm to the environment we can manage our efforts to improve the planet and every living creature’s overall health.
