Gortner (1990) explains nursing
philosophy as an ideology of the profession that provides a universal context
for practice and research (as cited in McEwan & Wills, 2014).      Using multiple views in a unified manner
is essential to develop knowledge and foster professional growth (Giuliano,
Tyer-Viola, & Lopez, 2005 as cited in McEwan & Wills, 2014). According
to McEwan and Wills (2014), nursing philosophy seeks to understand the truth to
describe nursing by analyzing the concepts and theories that relate to nursing
practice. Philosophy of nursing as the basis for practice provides clarity and helps
promote the application of nursing knowledge as well as the development to further
nursing theories and knowledge. It also provides an established and working
foundation that can help understand the profession in a purposeful way.
